Mascara Allergies

Some people get a nasty allergic reaction to mascara .

Allergic reaction can occur anywhere in the body depending on the sensitivity of the individual.

The eyes in most people react to certain chemicals and, unfortunately for some,  there are some types of eye makeup, especially mascara which come into close contact with the eyes, and can do the damage, resulting in conjunctivitis, styes, swollen lids or even just runny eyes.
If you find that after using certain makes of mascara you get an unpleasant reaction, try and find a non allergic brand. There are plenty on the market.

Its just basically trial and error, but if you suffer from a severe attack you must stop using any eye makeup products immediately and consult with your physician

If you constantly find that you have a reaction to certain brands of eye makeup you should check here and see if there are any hypoallergenic products that may help.

This is crazy!!! Trial and error!?!?!?! Obviously the person who wrote this has never had a reaction to mascara! “Trial”, for one day will give you an “error” for at least a week afterwards. I want to really know what I can use.

    Hello Ashley

Yes you are right, the writer of this article has not suffered with an allergic reaction to mascara, but please note the following

      Hi Melissa

This is a difficult one and you have our sympathy. It is very easy just to suggest that you try out one of the many mascaras made, or claimed to be made, from natural substances, or that do not contain nickel (recognized as causing an allergic reaction).

Could it be that you are having a reaction to the product you use to cleanse your eyes at night?

Try using plain old Vaseline as a cleaner, it may help.

Really you should see a dermatologist to establish exactly what is causing your allergy. It will be quicker in the long run than just trying brand after brand of mascara until, with luck, one causes no problems. If you must, then go for hypoallergenic mascaras that do not contain oils, preservatives, and perfumes and are water based.

Eyelash curlers are also a possible cause of an allergic reaction so keep them clean and disinfect occasionally
Finally do use fresh mascara and discard any over six months old.

You probably are already aware of the points we mentioned as you have suffered for so long. Perhaps you should reconsider getting professional medical advice. Whatever you decide we hope your problem will be resolved very soon and with no ongoing complications.
