What is Threading?

Eyebrow threading is an ancient hair removal technique using a thread of twisted cotton. Originating  in India, it  has been used in Western countries for many years, but its only become fashionable to Europeans and Americans in recent times.

Advantages of Threading

How its done

A thin thread, usually cotton,  is tied at the ends and held in a circle between the hands. It is then twisted and rolled along the surface of the area where the hair is to be removed. (see image)

The hairs are caught in the thread and removed from the follicle. An entire row of hairs is pulled out at one go leaving a clean area.

This process is continued along the entire area to be treated.

How to prepare your eyebrows

• Clean the eyebrow area with cleansing cream and apply witch hazel to de-sensitise the under brow area.

• Brush your eyebrows with a small soft brush, maybe a soft clean toothbrush, into their natural shape, using an upwards movement to keep the hairs in place.

• Hold a ruler parallel to your nose and the inner corner of your eye to calculate the length of the brow. Mark the point where the brow should begin with a brow pencil. If your eyes are close set, you can widen the gap between your eyebrows and vice versa for too wide apart eyes.

• Now keeping the ruler against your nose move it from the inner corner of your brow to the top of the brow arch and mark again with a brow pencil.

• Link the dots in a smooth arch.

How to apply the wax

• Buy a professional waxing kit and follow the instructions, but briefly, the kit will contain a jar of wax which must be heated in boiling water and then applied carefully in the direction of the hair growth with a spatula or applicator underneath the line of your brow.

• Never wax above the eyebrow.

Removing the wax

• To get a professional look its important to remove the wax quickly, with the strips provided, in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Not only will it be less painful but you wont be left with unsightly marks.

• If you find there are some straggly stray hairs which somehow missed the wax you can gently pluck them with tweezers.

• Apply a soothing lotion such as tea tree oil onto the waxed area to soothe any possible redness and avoid direct sunlight and harsh makeup products for a few hours to give the skin time to recover.

• 3 tablespoons very fine oatmeal (whirl oatmeal in a food processor, if necessary)

• 1/2 large grapefruit

• olive or sunflower oil

You look in the mirror and there they are. Those ugly dark bags and shadows  under your eyes. They make you look tired and worn out, older than you really are.

What causes eye bags and how do you get rid of them?

One of the most common causes of dark under eye bags is not enough sleep. Surprisingly, too much sleep can also cause them.

If either of these are the cause, the solution is simply to increase the amount of sleep you get or decrease it according to your particular circumstances.

For most people, the optimum amount of sleep is 6 to 8 hours. Adjusting the amount of sleep you get to meet your particular needs will alleviate the dark circles under your eyes.

Too little Iron or deficiencies in other vitamins is also a common cause of dark circles under the eyes.

Since different people can have deficiencies in different vitamins and/or minerals, you should check with your doctor to determine what supplements and/or diet changes will resolve your problem. Blood tests may be able to determine which vitamins or minerals you need to supplement.

When you have a cold, the flu or any other illness, darkness under the eyes is quite common and will usually go away on its own.

Getting sufficient rest, fluids and a good diet, avoiding refined sugars and carbohydrates will help you recover from the illness and fade those dark circles.

Allergies can also cause dark under eye circles. In addition to rest, fluids and good diet, treating the allergy symptoms will help fade the dark circles.

Certain ethnic groups, such as those of Indian descent, and people who have had facial laser treatments, chemical peels, and such can often have hyperpigmentation.

This occurs when excessive melanin accumulates under the eyes. This can be treated using Hydroquinone or Kojic acid as they can lighten the skin in people who have hyperpigmentation.

It is often used to reduce the visible melanin in the skin before laser treatments to reduce the likelihood of postoperative hyperpigmentation.

Some medications, such as Retin A, can cause too many superficial blood vessels to become visible under the eyes.

Though you don’t want to eliminate all the vessels, many of them can be minimized or removed with intense pulsed light or a number of different laser treatments.

Other causes of visible blood vessels under the eyes are general fat loss, age related fat loss, skin that becomes thinner due to aging, superficial blood vessels or thinness that is hereditary.

When fat is lost in the face, whether it is from aging or any other reason, a hollow, sunken look can result with blood vessels being more apparent and causing a darkness to appear under the eyes.

Treatment for these conditions can include injecting catalysts and fillers, such as Restylane or Sculptra, or fat-grafting.

With any treatment involving any type of surgery, whether it is laser surgery or any other type of surgery, there are risks involved.

The same holds true with anything being injected, even fat taken from another area of your body or applied topically.

The first step in minimizing risks is to make sure you consult with a qualified, reputable physician for treatment. Topical treatments can cause burning, peeling, redness and swelling in some people.

Injection treatments and laser surgery can cause swelling, bruising and tenderness or pain. Both injections and topical treatments can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

With many of these treatments, a patient will be advised to avoid exposure to sunlight as much as possible.

However, whatever the reason for dark under eye circles, there is an immediate way to cover them, whether it is just until another treatment is done or as your only treatment and this is using a cream such as

Ingredients for Frozen Egg and Honey Facial Mask

• 1 egg
• 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted (but not hot)
• 1 tbs. honey

Method:

Beat the egg in a small bowl until frothy and well-mixed. Slowly add the liquid coconut oil and honey, beating until your mask is the consistency of mayonnaise.

Take an empty toilet tissue roll and set it on end in a clean bowl. Spoon mixture into the cardboard toilet paper roll (or consider using an empty deodorant container). Place tube, in the bowl, in the freezer overnight.

To use, peel away just the top 1/4 inch of the cardboard roll and smooth the frozen stick over your face (think of it as a push up pop). Leave your mask on for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

Return the cream stick covered with plastic wrap and frozen between uses.

Particularly soothing on sunburn and will keep indefinitely.

Thinning or total loss of eyelashes can have a devastating effect on a woman’s confidence, the effect around the most important and noticeable feature on the face has, until recently, been impossible to permanently repair. In the past only the introduction of false eyelashes has helped to temporarily mitigate the noticeable absence of lashes.

Now techniques have been developed to effectively transplant human donor hair onto both the upper and lower eyelids without damaging the prospects for new lash follicles to grow and flourish and existing lashes to remain undamaged.

Transplanting eyelashes is a delicate procedure requiring highly skilled micro surgical techniques, specialised instruments and measurement technology and a trained and experienced medical team.

Although some men undergo eyelash transplants, the majority of procedures are carried out on women, the only variation is the number of lashes that are transplanted as women have more lashes and denser growth than men.

The number of lashes to be transplanted is assessed in each case, depending upon the number of lashes already existing on the lids. On average a total of anywhere between 30 and 80 lashes are implanted, one at a time, and will eventually grow normally. In normal circumstances an eyelash takes between two and three months to grow.

The procedure is carried out in most cases under local anaesthetic and should be painless. The patient will have some bruising that will disappear leaving a natural look, permanent results and any scarring should be virtually undetectable.

It is vitally important that anybody considering the procedure should carry out rigorous checks on any medical facility offering eyelash transplant operations. At the least you will need to know about their experience and see for yourself evidence of their past successes, verifiable testimonials are a good start.

Some eyelash transplant procedures have not had a high success rate, new growth has been restricted or completely lost and existing lashes damaged so do carry out a careful investigation and obtain the best possible advice.

The cost in the USA is around $3000 an eye and can vary considerably. The first eyelashes transplant in the UK took place this summer (2009) at a cost of three thousand five hundred British Pounds. The nineteen year old patient suffered from trichtillomania, an obsessive pulling out of hair. The four hour procedure involved taking hairs from the back of the patients head and inserting them in her eyelids, where they are expected to take four to six months to thicken up.

The surgeon who carried out the operation is quoted as saying “ we often look to America for the latest in cosmetic surgery as they are the pioneers in the industry, but not all are as successful or as safe as this one”
