What is Threading?

Eyebrow threading is an ancient hair removal technique using a thread of twisted cotton. Originating  in India, it  has been used in Western countries for many years, but its only become fashionable to Europeans and Americans in recent times.

Advantages of Threading

• No chemicals
• Less painful than tweezing and waxing but still can hurt a bit
• Very fast
• Lasts for approximately 2-3 weeks
• Precise, leaving you with perfectly shaped brows
• Kind to the skin
• Minimal redness
• Can be used on any part of the face

Disadvantages

• It takes many years to master the art of threading . Finding an expert is essential.
• Some people may find that it hurts slightly
  

How its done

A thin thread, usually cotton,  is tied at the ends and held in a circle between the hands. It is then twisted and rolled along the surface of the area where the hair is to be removed. (see image)

The hairs are caught in the thread and removed from the follicle. An entire row of hairs is pulled out at one go leaving a clean area.

This process is continued along the entire area to be treated.

Once you have experienced eyebrow threading you wont go back to any other method of hair removal.

How to prepare your eyebrows

• Clean the eyebrow area with cleansing cream and apply witch hazel to de-sensitise the under brow area.

• Brush your eyebrows with a small soft brush, maybe a soft clean toothbrush, into their natural shape, using an upwards movement to keep the hairs in place.

• Hold a ruler parallel to your nose and the inner corner of your eye to calculate the length of the brow. Mark the point where the brow should begin with a brow pencil. If your eyes are close set, you can widen the gap between your eyebrows and vice versa for too wide apart eyes.

• Now keeping the ruler against your nose move it from the inner corner of your brow to the top of the brow arch and mark again with a brow pencil.

• Link the dots in a smooth arch.

How to apply the wax

• Buy a professional waxing kit and follow the instructions, but briefly, the kit will contain a jar of wax which must be heated in boiling water and then applied carefully in the direction of the hair growth with a spatula or applicator underneath the line of your brow.

• Never wax above the eyebrow.

Removing the wax

• To get a professional look its important to remove the wax quickly, with the strips provided, in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Not only will it be less painful but you wont be left with unsightly marks.

• If you find there are some straggly stray hairs which somehow missed the wax you can gently pluck them with tweezers.

• Apply a soothing lotion such as tea tree oil onto the waxed area to soothe any possible redness and avoid direct sunlight and harsh makeup products for a few hours to give the skin time to recover.

• For thicker growth its better to wax a little at a time.

• If you insist on having your eyebrows pierced please do your research thoroughly before undergoing the procedure. Going to a good practitioner hopefully will minimize the risk of leaving you with any unsightly scars or holes if, and when, the fashion changes, as it surely will.

A good plastic surgeon will, in most cases, be able to correct any scars or other deformity caused by piercing but please remember that the areas around the eyes are the most likely to be noticed for any uncorrected tissue scarring.

When correcting your eyebrows, you should bear in mind the shape of your face.

• If you have a circular face they will not require further rounding, but obliquely correcting towards the superior part of the base.
• For square features, the brows are usually thicker and more horizontal. You should, therefore, concentrate on making them thinner and giving them more shape.
• A triangular shaped face should have oblique upwardly shaped brows, separated a little from the nose area.
• Diamond shaped faces are likely to only need a small amount of adjustment, with an oblique as possible look.

Now you have perfectly shaped eyebrows and if you comb and massage them with face cream each night, they will become shiny, smooth and healthy looking.

However, if you really want to pierce your eyebrows there are a few things to consider first.

Piercing, as you can imagine, is not pain free and great care must be taken during the healing process and that will take six to eight weeks.

You must also decide on whether you want a ring or barbell inserted when the piercing is carried out. Don’t worry because the salon carrying out the procedure will have a choice.

Getting It Done

• Find a salon that has a licensed and experienced piercer and the premises look clean and well run.
• Check out that all the equipment is correctly sterilized after each use and that only new packaged hollow needles are used once and then disposed of.
• The piercing technician should wear new latex gloves straight out of the packaging so keep your eyes open and be aware that the procedures are being adhered to.
• Before booking your appointment it is worth watching other clients being pierced and a reputable salon will have no objection to you having a look.
• Warning – severe communicable diseases can be transmitted through unsterilized or previously used equipment.
• For your appointment wear clothes that do not have to be pulled up over your head so you can avoid the possibility of catching on your new jewelry, that could be painful!
• Keep your hair off your face. Just before the start and during the procedure try to relax by taking deep breaths and stay as calm as you can.
• Eyebrow piercing is generally carried out by first clamping the area before piercing with a hollow needle and inserting the jewelry so it is important to stay completely still.
• Watching may cause you to unconsciously react by wincing or jerking away so it is best to keep your eyes closed and it will all be over before you know it.

Piercing Aftercare

As with any penetration of the skin infection can incur after piercing. The salon will give you advice and you should follow their recommendations without fail.

Wash the wound with a commercial cleansing solution several times a day according to instructions, and if you run out of the medication then a weak solution of salt, preferably sea salt, in water that has been previously boiled or you can use distilled water, both make an adequate substitute.

Stick to the jewelry offered by the salon and do not be tempted to take it out or change it for another until the piecing has completely healed. The jewelry should be made of stainless steel, titanium or niobium, all three are hypoallergenic and inert towards the human body. Other metals may cause an adverse reaction, even gold.

Watch out for any signs of infection. Heat, throbbing pain, swelling and/or redness can all be signs of trouble so seek qualified medical advice as soon as possible and do NOT remove the jewelry until the doctor says so.

Removing the jewelry can allow harmful germs to enter the wound and become trapped inside as it closes and will only make the infection worse.

Take particular attention to the area around your eyes as it is easy to forget the piercing as the pain disappears. For example be careful when blow drying your hair, applying eye make up or inserting or removing contact lens.

It works better for fine hair than it does for coarse hair.

Plucking Eyebrows

This is perhaps the one method that most women have used at one time or another. It involves removing one hair at a time by grasping it with a pair of tweezers.

Though it is an easy method, it can be time consuming. You can do it yourself, though and that makes it one of the most preferred methods.

You will need good light and a mirror (a magnifying mirror is often preferred) that allows a good view of your eyebrows. I thoroughly recommend and wouldn’t be without it Tweezerman Mirror and Tweezer Kit

If you are bothered too much by the pain of the plucking, you can use ice to numb the area first. Then brush the eyebrow hair straight up with an eyebrow brush.

This makes it easy to see the hairs you want to remove. It is best to start at the point nearest your nose and work toward the temple, taking your time.

So there is less pain and the hairs stay smooth, always pluck the hairs in the same direction as their growth.

Stop frequently to check your progress and try not to over pluck.  If you do over pluck, you can use a eyebrow pencil that matches your eyebrows until the hair regrows.

Eyebrow Waxing

Waxing is a fairly quick method of removing unwanted hair from the eyebrows but can be rather painful. If your skin is very sensitive, this may not be a good method for you.

Though it is better to have a professional do the waxing, you can do it yourself. If you do want to try it yourself, be sure you buy professional quality supplies to get the best results.

You will first want to determine where the wax is to be applied. Brush your eyebrows into the defined shape you want so you can see the hair to be removed.

After warming the wax to the temperature recommended in the instructions, apply the wax in a thin layer to the unwanted hair with the applicator from the waxing kit. Be sure to apply it in the same direction the hair grows.

Then place a small piece of muslin on the wax and carefully smooth it.

Use one hand to hold the skin taut and pull the muslin off with your other hand. It is best to work on small areas at a time to avoid taking too much hair off.

Which ever method you choose, keeping your eyebrows well groomed is well worth the effort. You will not only look more polished but feel more confident in your appearance.

Oh dear, overwaxed, overplucked and overbare. This is what you should not do.

Waxing

As an ex- model, I know that to wax your eyebrows is not advisable, simply because next month the thicker look will be in vogue again.

Problems with waxing

• The eye area is very sensitive and waxing is not only painful but can pull and stretch the delicate skin.
• Side effects, such as red bumps or spots are likely to appear.
• Once you start down this road its extremely difficult to get the growth back to the way it was and you may end up having a brow transplant.

The only reason that I would advise this course of action is if there is excessive hair growth that is hard to manage with simply tweezers. Or for those amongst us who sport a monobrow.

A good beautician would be able to give an accurate assessment on individual cases.

Chinese interpretation of monobrow is that the person will not be blessed with much luck until the age of thirty.

• Overplucking

Many of us, at times, are too hamfisted with the tweezers and we are left with the problem of recreating those brows.

In time the hairs will grow back but in the meantime one of the best and easiest ways is to look for a brow kit that can be used to cover and fill in where the hairs have been pulled out.

Take it easy with those brow problems and think it through.
