Hi Christina

The average time you can expect your eyelashes to remain curled is about 4 weeks. If your perm hasn't worked the way you were led to expect, I would go back to the salon where you had them done and ask them to do it again with no charge to yourself.

However, you should have a sensitivity test done first.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on.

all the best Jaks

Hey,
My eyelashes are short and straight and this idea of having them permed and tinted is great; just what i need. After reading the reply from you to Rebecca, I felt like I should comment, because I had Trichotillomania for 5 years, since I was 9. It was awful, as it was also when I was growing up and felt very insecure and different to everybody else. I found that nobody could help, not my parents, not a doctor or anything, I either grew out of it, or used so much will power! I hoped no-one ever had to go through what I did. I am 16 now and I have gotten over it, and now I curl my eyelashes and apply mascara everyday before school. Its a shame my eyelashes are now short and straight, as before my condition, I had such beautiful long curly eyelashes. Its very hard and I wish Rebecca good luck. :) xx

Hi Rebecca,

I am so sorry to hear that you are suffering from Trichtillomania and only wish we could wave a magic wand and have you better in no time. First of all I must make it clear to you that this affliction is new to me, and it is only by doing some research on line that I have any idea what you are suffering.

In the first place I hope and expect that your parents have sought medical advice but I get the impression that even the most qualified specialists, and they cost money, are not totally confident of either the reasons or the cure from the disorder that is causing you such distress.

I have read an article by a paediatric psychologist in the US who has had experience with working with teen-agers suffering from trichotillomania who suggests that medication often does not demonstrate significant benefits whereas cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) consistently shows positive results.

It goes on to say that if there is an underlying mood or anxiety disorder the disorder may respond to medication but that comprehensive, CBT, habit reversal treatment, not medication, should be the first line of treatment.

I do not know where you live but a referral to a pediatric psychologist might prove to be a beneficial way forward for you but I suggest that you will have to be determined that, if and when you have your consultation, that the consultant does not just try to fob you off with some medication and will take the trouble to fully investigate the causes of your problem.

Not easy for one so young, I know but show this response to your parents and I feel sure that you can rely on their support.

Your eyelash problem may well resolve itself in the course of time if you can get your disorder successfully treated, but for now I suggest you should avoid any artificial aids to your eyelash area, such as false lashes.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to you.
