Yellow Tennis BallThanks to advances in optical technology there are now sunglasses and lenses available that are sports specific.

They are tailor made to the requirements of golfers, winter and water sports enthusiasts, athletes, mountain climbers, tennis players, cricketers and many other outdoor pursuits.

Sunglasses with prescription lenses have been available for a many years.

In their early days the prescription lenses were made from optical quality glass and that made them vulnerable to breakage.

The added danger of damage occurring to the eyewear while engaged in sport with the possibility of a fragment of glass entering the eye made these early sunglasses unsuitable for many sports particularly ball games.

Fortunately, the development of a suitable tinted plastic prescription lens followed soon afterwards.

These were shatterproof but extreme care in cleaning and handling was required as the lens surface was easily scratched.

Nowadays advancements in optical technology have virtually overcome the earlier disadvantages.

A variety of lenses, including Polarized, are now much more resistant to wear, automatically adjust to the prevailing weather conditions photo chromatic light weight and are designed for specific sports and outdoor activities.

Now even contact lens are light adjusting

The latest development is the availability of sunglasses that can highlight an object that is a particular color, making it easier to see against its background.

For example tennis players can wear protective sunglasses that make the yellow color of tennis balls easier to pick up and that may give the player a fractional advantage in reaction time.

Equally cricketers can benefit by having red objects enhanced, baseball, golf lacrosse, hockey in fact any players of any outdoor ball game can benefit without danger of eye damage, whether or not they need prescription lenses.

Water sport enthusiasts need to protect themselves from reflected glare from the surface of the water as well as the harmful UV rays from sunlight.

Again this problem has been solved. Get the right sunglasses and suffering from red eye and other glare related eye soreness problems become a thing of the past.

Just one word of warning, don’t fall for a pair of those sexy designer sunglasses just because they look so good.

Remember that for sport and any energetic activity comfort is the priority, and that includes lightweight and a secure fit to the face. You really don’t want to risk them slipping just as you are about to make that winning volley!
