The United States, Europe and Australia have standards for the UV protection provided by sunglasses. A manufacturer or distributor would be in breach of the Trades Description Act in the UK and similar legislation in the other jurisdictions if they promote a product with false information.

The problem is that comprehensive oversight of such legislation is not practical. No doubt, at the cheaper end of the market, information on the UV ratings will, in many cases, be at best dubious.

This is why we advise that buyers should obtain their sun glasses from a reputable retailer and preferably choose an established brand name.

There is a huge industry in brand name pirating of sun glasses so "caveat emptor" buyer beware!

I've always wondered whether I could trust the UV ratings on cheap glasses. How reliable are these ratings? I don't think there's a gov't regulatory commission on them, so anyone can just put on a sticker that says 100% UV Protected. Hoping that I'm wrong, but I think that's the case. Please let me know if this is or isn't the case.
